Travis Thompson

Chief Architect

Travis is the Chief Architect of DataOS, building full-stack Data Product solutions, and a founding contributor to the Data Developer Platform Standard that enables flexible implementation of disparate data design architectures such as data products, meshes, or fabrics. Over 30 years in all things data engineering, Travis has designed state-of-the-art architectures and solutions for top organisations, including GAP, Iterative, MuleSoft, HP, and many more. He is also an active advocate for polymorphic data architectures and contributes extensively to community archives.

Travis Thompson is a systems thinker in the truest sense: an architect who doesn’t just design software, but redefines the foundations on which modern data ecosystems are built.

As Chief Architect at The Modern Data Company, Travis is one of the core minds behind DataOS, the world’s first data operating system. His work centres on a simple but powerful idea: the future of data is not in stitching together tools, but in designing a unified architectural substrate where data, intelligence, and operations coexist and evolve together.

With decades of experience across enterprise architecture, software engineering, and platform design, Travis has consistently operated at the intersection of complexity and clarity. His approach is deeply rooted in iterative architecture and lean methodology, favoring systems that evolve with intent rather than collapse under rigidity. He believes architecture is not a static blueprint, but a dynamic system that must continuously adapt to business goals while maintaining balance in technical debt.

Before building the Operating System for Data

Before his work on DataOS, Travis played a pivotal role in shaping large-scale enterprise platforms at organizations like Gap Inc., where he served as a Distinguished Engineer and Lead Architect. There, he led the design of global merchandising and planning systems: platforms that powered critical business functions such as inventory management, pricing, allocation, and analytics across multiple brands and geographies. His contributions extended beyond systems into operating models, where he helped pioneer decentralised, self-organising architectural ecosystems that empowered teams to move faster without losing coherence.

His earlier work with MuleSoft placed him at the forefront of the application networks movement, where APIs became the connective tissue of enterprise systems. This experience further shaped his perspective on interoperability from an integration problem to an architectural one.

Across every role, a consistent pattern emerges: Travis is drawn to moments of transition: when industries shift, paradigms break, and new abstractions are required. Today, that transition is the shift from fragmented data stacks to AI-native, unified data ecosystems.

Motivations

Through DataOS, Travis is helping define this new paradigm. The platform abstracts the underlying complexity of modern data infrastructure and replaces it with a declarative, interoperable system where data is treated as a product: discoverable, governed, reusable, and ready for activation across analytics, applications, and AI.

But beyond the systems he builds, Travis is equally known for the way he thinks and leads. A mentor to architects and engineers, he brings a rare combination of technical depth and strategic foresight, with a strong bias toward execution. Colleagues often describe him as someone who can deconstruct the most complex problems into solvable components, while aligning teams around a shared vision of progress.

At a time when the data ecosystem is converging, often in fragmented and superficial ways, Travis advocates for a different path: true unification at the architectural layer, where semantics, governance, and logic are not retrofitted, but inherently designed into the system.

In many ways, his work represents a broader shift in the industry: from building pipelines to building platforms, from managing data to engineering intelligence, and from integrating tools to designing systems that think in a shared language.
